Remembering the role of farm wage workers on the World Food Day!

16 October 2023

On World Food Day, as we celebrate the bounty of the earth and the tireless efforts of those who feed the world, it's crucial to remember the often-overlooked heroes of agriculture – the farm wage workers. These 450 million women and men are the invisible backbone of the global food production system. They represent over 40% of the world's agricultural labor force, and their role is nothing short of indispensable.

The Invisible Labor Force

Unlike farmers, these wage workers do not own or rent the land they cultivate, nor do they possess the tools and equipment required for their labor. Instead, they rely on their hard work, determination, and expertise to till the soil, plant seeds, tend to crops, and harvest the food that sustains us all.

However, despite their critical contributions, the plight of farm wage workers has been largely overshadowed. They are often left out of national and international agendas, and their unique challenges are frequently unnoticed. Many of them, along with their families, are part of the core rural poor in various countries.

AgriShare: Bridging the Gap

Recognizing the invaluable role of farm wage workers, actors like AgriShare are taking steps to address their needs and challenges. AgriShare is a platform that connects farmers with farm workers, creating a win-win situation for both groups.

Farmers using AgriShare gain access to a pool of skilled and casual labor, while farm workers find opportunities for employment. The platform offers a range of options for both parties, which not only enhances competitiveness but also ensures the delivery of top-notch services.

A Brighter Future for Agriculture

As we commemorate World Food Day, it's an ideal moment to salute these hardworking individuals who labor in the fields- day in and day out, often under challenging conditions. It's time to shine a spotlight on their vital contributions to our food system.

By acknowledging their work and supporting initiatives like AgriShare, we can collectively work towards a more inclusive and sustainable agricultural system. This World Food Day, let's pledge to ensure that every link in the agricultural chain, from farm wage workers to farmers, is recognized and valued. Together, we can build a brighter and more equitable future for agriculture and food production.
